HOF Firmenchronik 1988 – 2018

In the innovation elite for the third time

It is no coincidence that, after 2016 and 2017, HOF received the TOP 100 award in 2018 as well, once again making it one of the TOP 100 most innovative companies in Germany.

It is the power of innovation and a simple maxim that make HOF so successful: always thinking a little further, always looking for the best solution for customers. With over 30 years of experience, HOF is the leading specialist for manufacturing individual freeze drying systems, loading and unloading systems, and freezing and thawing equipment for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries – and with good reason!

According to the analysis by innovation researcher Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke from the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, HOF was particularly convincing in the categories “innovation success” and “innovation climate”.

In an official ceremony, all winners received their awards from physicist and journalist Ranga Yogeshwar, who handed over the certificates and trophies as a mentor of the competition.

The TOP 100 were awarded in Ludwigsburg for the 25th time to honour the innovation elite in Germany in several categories.

We are very pleased to be among the winners for the third time and would like to thank all employees for their motivation and power of innovation and of course we also thank our customers for the regular exchange of knowledge.

“For us, this award means motivation and encouragement to continue offering our customers the best solutions every time.”

Review of ACHEMA 2018 – innovative and successful!

HOF invited visitors to their exhibition stand to celebrate the 30th company anniversary.

At the worldwide leading exhibition for the processing industry, more than 3,700 exhibitors from 55 countries presented the latest equipment and innovative processes on 133,000 m² over the course of one week.

With 145,000 visitors between 11 and 15 July, the event organiser also saw ACHEMA 2018 in Frankfurt a great success.

HOF presented itself with a new exhibition look at the leading trade fair this year. The exhibition stand was well frequented by existing customers and by numerous interested individuals who came to learn about new technologies, discuss new projects or simply to establish a personal contact.

Following the “knowledge differentiates” principle, HOF presented a new innovative loading and unloading system with a robot for placing stoppers with the wireless tempris© sensor system, which proved to be very popular.

It is here: our new website is online

It is done!

After an exciting and busy time, the HOF website has been comprehensively revised. The new pages have a fresh, modern design.

The objective was to make the new website more modern, while also guiding the respective target groups to the desired information easily, quickly and in an interesting manner.

In addition to a creative and modern look, new digital tools were also integrated, e.g. video tracks, and of course the new website was created with responsive web design in mind.

This has created a comprehensive information portal on which HOF can build in the future to provide customers and interested persons with important and current information in the best possible way.

We hope you enjoy exploring our new website and would be pleased if you stop by often in the future.

Work preparation

Strategically oriented and flexible work preparation (WP) is a key component of the daily processes at HOF for ensuring smooth operation. WP assures the interlinking of expertise and planning in that you take over the planning of processes for strategic tasks. It guarantees that the planning, implementation and controlling of the individual work areas increase efficiency and preserve sustainability for HOF. There is an interchange with the design department and other departments, as the result of which WP experiences have already frequently contributed to improvements in the processing workflows.

Warehouse & logistics

Over 60,000 items are currently managed in the HOF warehouse. The smallest intricate components, piping materials, compressors and pumps, through to chamber containers for freezers, are kept in stock for fast reaction times for service purposes, as well as for short-notice delivery to system builders in the freezer sector. HOF strives to keep service downtimes of the supported systems down to an absolute minimum. While this is ensured with 24-hour service availability, it is just as important to have most of the commonly required system components available in stock.

The summary task of warehouse logistics is to accept the procured materials, check their usability, and pass them on to the requisitioning department as requested. In the meantime, materials that are not immediately required are stored in a practical and manageable manner.

A special aspect at HOF that needs to be mentioned is that a central communications interface is set up as a pick-up point for components. Any service employees can call up the ordered items here around the clock. In preparation for service and repair work, various project-specific items, components and documents are made available here so that the service technicians have all the necessary parts at their disposal as quickly as possible in addition to their standard equipment.

HOF SynchroFreeze: vacuum induced ice nucleation
SynchroFreeze is HOF's answer for controlled ice nucleation.
This process is characterized by a conditioning phase, followed by a cooling and a vacuum induced nucleation during the freezing process. Depending of the product, the product structure can be optimized, the drying times can be reduced and a favorable effect for the reconstitution process can be reached. Only limited machine modifications are necessary for the implementation.

Trends in the refrigeration technics:
Conformity in the context of current F-Gas regulation.
Based on the European F-Gas regulation and a corresponding requirement for reduction of the allowed HFC quantity, we have by now an availability shortage of the currently used synthetical refrigerants.
A nitrogen technology and the use of natural refrigerants are alternatives. At the same time, in the sector of the conventional refrigerant technology, it is possible to replace discontinued refrigerants by alternative refrigerants – without even elaborate system modifications.

Leaks of silicone oil:
Prevention and detection
Any leak of silicone oil means product losses and production losses. Preventively, it is possible to reach an optimized process reliability by relieving the flexible corrugated hoses of the heat transfer system. At the same time, the mass-spectrometry also enables to detect the smallest quantities of silicone oil in the drying chamber. Cyclical or continual, the implementation of this technology is flexible and secures the production.

2:30 p.m coffee break
Following the program, you will have the possibility to hold further talks or to participate in a company tour.

At the end of the workshops, we offer the opportunity to make a company tour of both HOF’s sites, in Lohra and in the adjacent Gladenbach-Mornshausen.

The event is expected to end at: 6.p.m

The high performance and reliability of our systems are determining factors in all manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic systems. Besides standardized and special formats, special packaging such as dual-chamber carpules or dual-chamber syringes can be transported. At the same time, we offer an automatic loading and unloading of bulk freezer-dryers.

HOF has a correct innovative answer to all new requirements in the pharmaceutical area.
In the past, recent developments for loading and unloading systems were continually implemented, which will be explained below.

Reliability, a rapid detection of individual objects, and hygienic design are among the determining factors for the sensor technology of our machines. The latest sensor technology from stainless steel in corresponding design are our conditions for high functionality and ensures optimal cleaning and sterilization results. Furthermore, the production safety will be increased. For a potential sensor replacement, it is not necessary to teach again the positions.

With regard to the hygienic design, all machine parts were checked in classified area, so that possible high radii, the material selection and an easy disassembly have an important effect on the results in the cleaning processes.

In the future, changeover times for changing the vial sizes will be considerably reduced by means of a simplified functional design of the format parts. The format parts will be easily replaced using glove ports within a cRABS or isolator. Format parts with bottle neck guidance are implemented at particular points to increase the reliability of the production safety.

The control engineering of loading and unloading systems will prospectively use the new developments of Siemens with the scope of TIA Portal (Totally Integrated Automation Portal). In this way, the flexibility will be increased and up-to-date appropriate technical solutions are ensured.

An intuitive guidance via touchscreen, fix function keys or a combination of both - the new implemented and in the meantime standardized operating panels offer the users an optimal solution. Widescreen displays ensure an optimal overview of all plant conditions.

HOF’s loading and unloading systems dispose of modern information and communication techniques in the course of the digital revolution “Industry 4.0”. Many custom-specific requirements are fulfilled, such as evaluations of the machine, from easy motion counters through constant controls of motor speeds and moments, up to the automatic maintenance recommendation, by means of a trend program.

“It is our goal to push new developments to make every individual project as successful as possible – of course, hand in hand with our customers. Innovative and promising solutions are often already defined during the tendering stage, and are then implemented in the according system.”

Jens Gemmecker, Sales Management

Automation concept

Let us introduce: our software department

Valid software is one of the most important requisites for research and production in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry. HOF’s software department accompanies the software development from the design phase, project planning, start-up, qualification up to the service, with own software experts.

Patrick Schuhmacher
Patrick Schuhmacher

The steadily increasing requirements in terms of freeze-drying processes and documentation are a continually changing challenge for the system control. The system control does not only ensure a faultless interaction of all machine components, it also keeps records of all process data and events, to meet the requirements of the American and European health authorities.

Our control and visualization systems offer our customers a user-friendly and process-oriented operation. They are designed in a way that it is possible, to revert to existing modules, which can be adjusted without any problem to individual and specific customer requirements, especially within the projects

Professional planning

The subsequent software design planning is based on the effective design documents. At the outset of the project, the Design Document SDS (Software Design Specification) is prepared, including all annexes such as FDS (Functional Design Specification), plant alarm list and functional detail planning. During the module planning, we first find out, which existing modules are appropriate to perform the required tasks and how they can be modified if necessary. When required, module development specifications are prepared. The program development consists of adapting existing modules or creating new ones. By means of the module test, individual modules are checked, the results are recorded in the module test protocol. In the installation and integration test, the software will be implemented in the plant and the whole function is tested. The results are recorded in the software integration test plan.

Reliability, safety and service

As the last link in the chain of manufacturing, the software is responsible for control inputs and for the timely operational availability for FAT (factory approval) with the customer. To make this possible, adherence to internal manufacturing deadlines plays a central role. This also applies to the timeframe after delivery to customer-site. Start-up and qualification runs are carried out whose positive completion is essential for the successful acceptance.
At the same time, HOF pursues a continuous development of existing systems, as well as individual new development to optimize specific requirements.
It also includes a routine and accurate implementation of relevant software and hardware updates of the producers.

“Another important range of duty is our 24-hour service. When necessary, it is possible to help you immediately via Remote-PC”

Patrick Schuhmacher, Head of Software Engineering
